CCFEW Planning Meeting Schedule

We had a great turnout and a great day for our walk on April 28th. It was a busy morning at the park, with the south parking lot closed off for the planting event later in the morning, and the north lot mainly filled because of launching day at the yacht club. We were a bit late starting to make sure everyone had a chance to find find parking.

It has become a bit of a tradition for Bob Yukich to lead our April walks. This year, he lead a group of 35 people to find 54 species of birds. Late April can be a time of great diversity as the last of the early migrants linger while the first of the later species start to arrive. The weather and the birds cooperated for us this year.

On and near the lake we found lots of Red-necked and Horned Grebes as well as a few Common Loons. We found 5 swallow species, including purple Martins (usually the last to arrive), as well as the first Chimney Swifts.

Moving inland, we found lots of Yellow-rumped Warblers along with a few Palm and Pine Warblers. Also seen were Winter Wren, Brown Thrasher, Eastern Towhee, Field Sparrow, Swamp Sparrow, and lots of White-throated Sparrows & Ruby-crowned Kinglets.

Our most unexpected sighting was a pair of Coopers Hawks nesting in “the bowl”.

After having almost no pictures last month, we have lots of photos from this walk:
