We had beautiful weather and a good turnout for our May 24th walk, lead by Andrew Keaveney, at Sam Smith Park. We started the walk by walking our on the landfill area to look for water birds, and of course the hoped-for Whimbrels. Birding was a bit slow there, but a small flock of Whimbrel made a brief fly-by. Also there we found a small flock of Bonaparte’s Gulls, a lingering Common Loon, as well as both Common and Caspian Terns. We observed Gray Catbird, Northern Mockingbird, Willow Flycatcher, as well as Cliff Swallows nesting at the filtration plant.
When we moved north in the park, we had pretty good luck finding warblers, with at least 11 different species seen including good looks at a male Blackpoll Warbler and fleeting glimpses of a male Canada Warbler deep in the shadows.
With so much going on this spring, including the new proposal for a skating trail at Sam Smith Park, I have been unusually slow getting this report posted, but as a bonus, there are 2 photo galleries this month.
Thanks again to Birds & Beans for sponsoring our walks, and we hope to see another crowd of enthusiastic birders for our June 21st walk: same time and place!
