A wet and dreary early morning turned into beautiful weather for our walk on Saturday, November 10th. Don Burton led our first “winter” Humber Bay East walk of the season, but it looked and felt more like an autumn walk.
We expect the winter walks to focus mainly on waterfowl, and we had good success in that area even though the number of birds was fairly low. Waterfowl highlights included a female White-winged Scoter, Common Loons, a Horned Grebe, the first Long-tailed Ducks of the season and a flock of Green-winged Teal in the creek.
We also did surprisingly well with land birds including both nuthatch species, both kinglet species, a late Hermit Thrush, and at least 20 Killdeer on the mudflats of Mimico Creek.
We even had a late migrating raptor as a Red-tailed Hawk soared past Marina Del Rey, but unfortunately we missed the Redpolls that were seen there later in the day.
