September 2024 Bird Walk
PXL_20240914_132357198~2

Ross Harris led our September Bird Walk on a calm, slightly foggy morning at Colonel Samuel Smith Park. With a static weather pattern for several days before, there was little evidence of bird migration. After struggling to find any birds at all, we finally found a few small flocks of very furtive warblers in the north part of the park around “the bowl”.

With their cryptic fall plumage, lack of song and all the leaves on the trees, fall warbler watching can be a frustrating challenge, but we did get good looks at some of them. We found both a Black-crowned Night Heron and a Great Blue Heron in the pond as well as three Green-winged Teal. The ducks are still in their drab non-breeding plumage, but the Teal were easily distinguished from the Mallards by their small size.

A surprise find near the end of the walk was a lone Least Sandpiper at First Beach. By the end f teh walk, we managed to find 30 species. Here is the complete list:

Canada Goose
Mallard
Green-winged Teal
Red-necked Grebe
