June 2026 Bird Walk

Garth Riley led our June 14th walk at Colonel Samuel Smith Park. It was a beautiful sunny day, with a nice variety of birds and butterflies to see. As expected, we saw breeding birds, including juveniles of many species, including three stripey Red-necked Grebe chicks and a Red-winged Blackbird that looked like it had left the nest a day or two too early.

With the leaves on the trees and many birds on nests, we stayed in open areas along the waterfront where the birds would be easier to see. Our group of 29 included many first-time participants. Our species count beat our participant number by two. Here is the full list of species found on the walk:
