David Creelman led our March 28th walk at Colonel Samuel Smith Park. Although it was the end of March, it felt a lot like winter! It was sunny, but the temperature was a few degrees below freezing, and there was a strong west wind. The ice has stayed late this year, and the harbour area was still half frozen. That ice tends to attract a flock of gulls, but today we couldn’t find any unusual ones among them.
We mostly saw typical migrants, but a Western Grebe was spotted earlier in the morning. We managed to see it, but it was sleeping most of the time. As the name suggests, this is a bird typically found in the western half of North America, but in recent years, one has been appearing here most years among the migrating Red-necked Grebes around this time.
We didn’t see large numbers of any particular species, but by teh end of the walk we had tallied 36 species. Here is the full list:
