Cesar Ponce led our November 15th walk at Colonel Samuel Smith Park. It was a cool, cloudy day, with an easterly wind promising stormy weather ahead. Fortunately, the rain held off until after the walk was over.
We spent the whole time out on the lakefill area of the park, venturing all the way out to West Point. We were mainly looking for waterfowl, but found a nice variety of land birds there as well. Waterfowl were unusually scarce for this time of year. There were no large flocks on he lake. We probably saw more ducks flying by than we saw on the water. We watched an American Herring Gull eating something in the water near Whimbrel Point: possibly a Long-tailed Duck.
The best bird of the day wasn’t a duck, but a very late Palm Warbler. Other surprises included a pair of Ravens, a Yellow-rumped Warbler and a small flock of Cedar Waxwings. By the end of the walk, we had tallied 32 species. Here is the full list:
