September 2025 Bird Walk

Garth Riley lead or September 13th Bird Walk at Colonel Samuel Smith Park. The weather was cool, calm, and overcast. These would generally be good conditions to observe fall migrants, but the birds were remarkably scarce. Most of the birds we found were well hidden in the foliage, giving brief glimpses when they popped into the open. We didn’t spend much time at the lake, but despite visiting the pond, First Beach and Second Beach, we saw no ducks, geese or swans! Eventually we found a few small flocks of warblers, but there were a lot of silent trees in between. By the end f the walk, we had found 31 species, including 9 species of warblers.
